Culturally Competent Ethics: Diversity and Social Justice in Ethics
Last week, you learned more about what it means to be a counselor, how to engage in a helping relationship appropriately, how our values play into both, and potential ethical concerns that comes with being a counselor in general. This week, we are going to dive into multicultural, community, and social justice perspectives along with diversity issues in ethics. Part of being an ethical and culturally competent counselor involves understanding that competence in an ongoing process that never ends. You have to be aware of both the benefits of embracing multiculturalism and social justice advocacy and the potential ethical concerns that may present themselves.
You are going to examine the ethical codes from a multicultural and social justice perspective, evaluate cultural values and assumptions in therapy, and how to be an effective advocate in community settings. Additionally, we will spend some time learning about ethical issues that may present around sexual orientation, disabled persons, and unintentional racism and microaggressions with clients of color. This week should be a more focused expansion on everything you’ve learned thus far in the program about multiculturalism and social justice advocacy.
Before you begin, please take this Self-Assessment Week 3
