Week 8 Overview
Relationships Among Culture, Language, Race, Identity, and Schooling
In this module, we take a deeper look at the relationships among culture, language, and race and their roles in our students' development. We begin by defining what we mean by "culture" and its role in student learning and development. We then move to looking at different contexts of learning and schooling itself, and how different aspects of these contexts may impact students' development, including cognitive development. Finally, we begin to make close connections between culture, language, and race with students' identities.
This Week We Will:
- Define "culture" and the nature of "culture."
- Explore the importance of culture and sociocultural context in thinking and learning.
- Define and examine schools as cultural institutions.
- Explore cultural tools of thinking and learning.
- Explore the connections between language, identity, and learning.
- Reflect upon how our knowledge and understanding gained in this module affects our work with our culturally and linguistically diverse students.
