Course Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive background in theories that have historically been at the forefront in explaining criminal behavior as well as those theories that are currently leading the field in explaining offending behavior. Biological, psychological, and sociological theories will be discussed as well as how SES, race, and gender fit into these theoretical traditions.  Additionally, I will be asking you to think about how to applies these theories to the criminal justice system.

This course is one of the core foundation courses in the MACJ curriculum. As such, it is my intention that you gain a full mastery and understanding of core criminological theories. Through this course, you will be developing your critical thinking and writing skills--key elements of the mission of Seattle University and the program goals of the Criminal Justice Department. This course will fit into your personal goals whatever they may be (i.e., understanding of core criminological content; strengthening of writing skills; application of content to your surroundings; application of content to your current job or dream job; understanding what is needed to help reduce criminal behavior and crime rates).
