Zheng Zhou

 Welcome

My name is Zheng Zhou. I am a graduate student in the Master of Nonprofit Leadership Program at Seattle University. This spring, I am doing a research project titled An Analysis of the Origin of Animal Welfare and the Necessity of Animal Welfare Legislation in Developing Country --The Case of China. I chose this topic because in recent years, raising awareness about animal welfare is an important component of social change movements sweeping across international landscape. And it continues to be important in shaping our understanding of ethical behavior towards animals.

What is the purpose of the study?

I launched this study to get a better understanding of challenges to the development and implementation of public policies to achieve animal welfare outcomes in China.

We know that many countries have enacted legislation to protect animals, and animal welfare and rights in China is a topic of growing interest. Movements towards animal welfare are expanding in China, including among homegrown Chinese activists.

I am interested in learning more about experiences from individuals and organizations that have been leading the fight for animal welfare in Asia.

Who are you interviewing?

For this study, I am interviewing individuals who have a minimum ten years of animal welfare experience in China. Participation is voluntary.

What is the format of the interviews?

I am inviting you to participate in a 45-minute interview. All interviews will take place remotely via Microsoft Teams. You will have the choice to participate in a video call, or to call in by phone.

During our conversation, we will be asking you:

  1. Can you tell me a little bit background of yourself? What made you getting into the animal welfare world? How long have you been doing this?
  2. What types of work you have done in the past years? Any achievement you would like to share related to animal welfare?
  3. What progress you have made so far?
  4. What challenges you have faced along the way? How did you overcome these?
  5. Looking into the future, what you expect to see regarding animal welfare in the next 10 years.

There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, or desirable or undesirable answers. We would like you to feel comfortable telling us what you really think.

How do I sign up?

You can sign up for an interview using this link: https://calendly.com/zhengzhou Links to an external site.

I look forward to our conversation.

What will you do with the information you gather?

I will be writing up the results of the study and presenting the results at the MNPL Capstone Festival on Saturday, June 5. I believe that this research will provide greater understanding of challenges to the development and implementation of public policies to achieve animal welfare outcomes in China, and strategies to overcome these barriers.

I will also share the results of our research with you and the other participants. My hope is that the results are useful to you as you plan your future work.
