Camille Rosetty
Welcome
My name is Camille Rosetty. I am a graduate student in the Master of Nonprofit Leadership Program at Seattle University. This spring, I am doing a research project titled Strategies for Supporting People and Pets in Under-resourced Communities in the U.S. I chose this topic because as both an animal advocate and student of social justice, I am interested in advancing community-centered approaches that honor the human-animal bond, incorporate inclusive practices, and help to build equity within the animal welfare sector.
What is the purpose of the study?
I launched this study to get a better understanding of how leading companion animal welfare organizations are working to implement strategies that support people and companion animals living in under-resourced communities throughout the U.S.
We know that while most people are aware of how poverty and structural inequality create challenges and barriers to accessing healthy food, education, jobs, health care, and housing, there is less awareness of how limited affordable veterinary and pet wellness services create similar obstacles and how that lack of access disadvantages millions of people and their pets across the United States. Bridging the gap in access is necessary, both to reach people and pets most often in need, and to create long-term, sustainable change within the animal welfare sector.
I am interested in learning more about your knowledge and experience working at organizations within the animal welfare sector that share this goal.
Who are you interviewing?
For this study, I will be interviewing program directors or program managers at organizations that are known members of the Human Animal Services Support (HASS) Coalition or the Humane Society of the United States Pets for Life Program (PFL). Participation in this study is voluntary.
What is the format of the interviews?
I am inviting you to participate in a 45-minute semi-structured interview. All interviews will take place remotely via Zoom. You will have the choice to participate in a video call, or to call in by phone.
During our conversation, I will be asking you questions such as:
- Tell me about your role at your organization. What motivates you to do this work?
- Would you say that the racial and ethnic composition of the staff and volunteers at your organization is representative of the community you serve?
- What programs and services does your organization offer to clients? Why does your organization offer these programs and services?
- How do people know that these services and programs are available to them?
- Is there a high demand for these programs and services? How are these programs and services funded?
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, or desirable or undesirable answers. I would like you to feel comfortable telling me what you really think.
How do I sign up?
You can sign up for an interview using this link: https://calendly.com/rosetty-capstone/60min Links to an external site.
I look forward to our conversation.
How will you ensure privacy during the study?
All of the information you provide will be kept confidential and your name and place of employment will not be used in any public dissemination of the data I collect. I will share trends in the data, including types of job titles, race, ethnicity and gender identities of staff, but that information will not be associated with you as an individual.
This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Seattle University, and is guided by the principles outlined by the IRB for the protection of human subjects.

What will you do with the information you gather?
I will be writing up the results of the study and presenting the results at the MNPL Capstone Festival on Saturday, June 5. I believe that this research will provide greater understanding about how animal welfare can be a more equitable and inclusive space that dually benefits both people and pets.
I will also share the results of our research with you and the other participants. My hope is that the results are useful to you as you plan your future work.
