Video Quizzes
Canvas Studio allows you to create a quiz over any video that you have recorded or uploaded to your Studio Library, be it a video you recorded directly in Studio, or one you imported from YouTube, or one you made somewhere else, such as Zoom or Spark. As long as it resides in your Studio library you can add a quiz to it. The images below show what the quiz looks like from the student's perspective, and are followed by instructions for creating a Video Quiz and integrating it with the Canvas Gradebook.
As students watch a video, questions will pop up at points along the video timeline:
When students click on a question mark, the question will open. They have the option to answer or re-watch.
Once they have submitted their quiz, they will see the results:
If the quiz has been integrated with the Gradebook, they will see their score reflected there.

Setting up a Video Quiz and Integrating it with the Gradebook
The next two sections cover how to 1.) set up a quiz in a video and 2.) integrate it with the Gradebook if you want students to receive a grade for the quiz.
(Note that in the interest of keeping these instructions simple, we have not included every option available for video quiz settings. If you want more information, please see the Canvas Guides for Video Quizzes Links to an external site.. )
1. HOW TO CREATE A VIDEO QUIZ |
Go to your Studio Library by clicking on the Studio icon in the far left (black) navigation. Navigate to the video that you want to use to add questions. Click on the 3 dots to open up the menu and select Quizzes and the + Add Quiz.
This will open up the Quiz Setting window and you can give your quiz a Title and then click Get Started.
As you watch the video, you can click on the timeline to stop and add a question. Choose the type of question you want.
This will open up the question information window where you can fill out the questions, answers, add more answers and other options. When you are done, click Save.
Once you have saved the question, it will appear on the timeline as a question mark. You can return and click on the question mark if you need to edit or you can continue adding questions.
Once you have added all of your questions, click on Done on the top bar. Your quiz will be saved and ready to be used or integrated with the Canvas Gradebook following the steps below.
2. HOW TO SET UP A GRADED VIDEO QUIZ |
Once you have created your Video Quiz, go to Assignments and create a new assignment. Set the points to be the same number as the points in the quiz. In the Submission Type area, choose External Tool from the menu.
This will open up the Configure External Tool window. Choose Studio from the menu.
This will open up your Studio Library. Find the video where you have added your quiz questions. You will see below that there is an option to embed the video without questions (standard embed) or Video Quiz Embed. When you click on Video Quiz Embed, it will open up a menu of all the quizzes you may have created over this video. In this case, there is only one, Pencil Quiz. Once you have selected the quiz, click the Embed Button.
Now the link to your quiz will show up in the link box. Click on Load this tool in a new tab so that the video quiz does not appear within the Assignment window as this can be hard to watch.
When your students click on the assignment, the result will look like this.
Once they click on the Load [TITLE OF QUIZ] in a new window, the quiz will appear as below and they can click Get Started to begin.
▶︎Note: since this is an open course, there is no way to share the video quiz with you. What you see below is just an image; you can't click it to get started.
