Start with an Ignatian Approach

Welcome to this course and to the first module.  No matter how many different modalities are being used to teach during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Seattle University approach to teaching our students has always remained the same--that of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm and care for the whole person. This may feel challenging to accomplish at a distance but physical distance does not have to mean emotional distance. We hope that the next few pages will give you some ideas for how other faculty have managed to design rich learning experiences for their students at a distance.

In this module you will find pages on:

  • Ignatian Pedagogy Online, which outlines some of the basic principles of Ignatian pedagogy and gives examples of how other faculty have used them in their online courses.
  • Focus on Your Students, which provides some questions to think about as you design learning activities for your students.
  • Tapping into Your Real Course Goals, which encourages you to reflect on your own excitement about your discipline and how to communicate that to students.
  • Understanding by Design, a 3.5-minute video that outlines how to design a course to focus on the important, transferable concepts and processes that you want students to grasp.
  • Preparing for Assignment Design, which paves the way for the next module, Design Great Assignments and Activities, and asks the same questions we use during CDLI's Course Design program to help faculty think deeply about the kinds of assignments and activities they could design for their courses.
