Week 11 Overview

Climate and Environmental Policy

Perhaps the most pressing issue of our times, for all people, is the crises emerging due to climate change. Poor people are disproportionately impacted by all aspects of environmental policy. They live on the most poisoned lands, breath the dirtiest air, eat the worst foods produced by an industrial food system, and face the worst devastation from disasters like storms, floods, and fires. In this section of the course, we will look at the global and domestic legal structures that have hastened climate change and concentrated decision-making power about energy and environmental policy in the hands of those who profit from polluting industries. We will also look at the efforts being undertaken by anti-racist, anti-colonial, feminist and anti-capitalist social movements working to transition domestic and global economies to new ways of being that might prevent the worst impacts of climate change.
