Importing a Template into Your Course

Once you have downloaded a template, you can locate it wherever your computer saves downloads. It will have the file type .imscc at the end of the file name. When you are ready to import, open your empty course shell*  in Canvas and click on Settings in the left navigation to open the Settings window. From there, click on Import Course Content, which should be on the right side of your course content or possibly below, depending on the width of your screen.

*You can import a template into a course that already has content. The template will be added to the existing content so no content will be lost but some navigational settings may be overwritten.

Settings Window

1. In the Import Content window choose Canvas Course Export Package from the Content Type dropdown menu.

Select Content Type Window

2. Make sure you click All Content and then Browse for the template file you downloaded (file name ends with imscc.) When the template file has been selected, click Import.

Import Content Window

3. The import screen will initially show Queued, then Running, then Complete. Once you see the download is completed, click on Home to see how your new course looks.
