On Re-imagining Inclusivity

DR. TEODORA SHUMAN

Dr. Teodora Shuman received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Belgrade University, Yugoslavia, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Her doctoral dissertation focused on NOx and CO Formation for Lean-Premixed Methane-Air Combustion in a Jet-Stirred Reactor Operated at Elevated Pressure.

Dr. Shuman and several of her colleagues recently received a $1.86 million NSF grant which will allow us to implement a new approach to teaching engineering. Seattle U mechanical engineering students and faculty will be immersed in doing engineering with engineers. The changes will impact all students, including women and underrepresented minorities. These program changes are motivated by national concerns about student persistence and engineering workplace readiness.

These videos were made during the time of covid-19.

CENTERING WISDOM

  1. ReflectionWhat are some struggles in your professional or academic field that you have come across because of your identity? How has that affected your ability to succeed?

  2. Reflection: What are the concrete steps to be taken to create an equitable environment in academic and professional environments?

  3. ActivityHow is success measured in a non equitable environment? How is care and learning measured?
