MEETING 8: What We'll Do

Robot 8The goal today is to get all of your module landing pages built. This is a really useful exercise and you will be grateful later when you come back to work on each module that you can use the module landing pages as a guides for everything that needs to go in the module. You will be able to see what assignments are due, readings, links to other external websites, videos, etc.

Note: these pages aren't written in stone. One of the handy things about fleshing out module landing pages is that it is easier to spot gaps and redundancies. You will probably be shifting things around a bit as you go along.

After that, we will focus on discussions. Discussions are the heart of fully online classes but writing good discussion prompts can be challenging. We will look at examples and try to unpack some of the challenges before you start writing your prompts for our next meeting.

What to Bring

  • The overview text you have drafted for each module landing page.

What We'll Do

  • We will build out all module landing pages, which will include:
    • Overview text
    • Links to relevant subpages, assignments, and discussions.
    • Images, if you have time.
  • (See Module Landing Page Examples for reference)
  • Talk about writing your discussion prompt and look at some examples. We will consider:
    • What are you trying to do with your discussions?
    • What makes a good prompt?
    • How to use videos and other media to trigger discussion.
    • How your discussions can build on each other throughout the quarter.
    • If you might have students run the discussions

What to Do Before We Meet Again

  • Finish all of your Module Landing Pages if we didn't during our meeting.
  • Write all of the discussion prompts for your course. (See Homework)
