MEETING 5: What We'll Do
This meeting is important because we will create a map of your course in Canvas with placeholders for assignments, content pages, discussions, etc.—in short, a clear outline of your course. This will make it easier for you to keep track of all the moving parts. It will also be an opportunity to take a look at a bird's-eye view your course to see if the flow seems right; if the assignments are paced; and where student interactions will be happening. Most importantly, it will give you an opportunity to quickly shift activities and content around if need be.
What to Bring
- Your paper course map.
- Any notes about assignments, scaffolding, content needed, etc.
What We'll Do
- We will start by transferring everything on your paper map into Canvas.
- This means that you will have placeholders for all of the content in every module: module landing pages, content pages, assignments, discussions, quizzes, etc. These will not need to be fleshed out but they should be there with descriptive titles.
- We will also apply some lenses to the Canvas maps to see what kinds of interactions have been built in; opportunities for different kinds of feedback; points of reflection, etc.
- Once we have the Canvas map built, we will add the assignments that you have been working on and make sure that all the details of every assignment are in order. Clear assignment directions can take a while to get right, even more so online when you may have to explain to students how they will need to work in groups, submit work for peer review, upload videos, access external sites, etc. The goal of this meeting is make sure that you know how to get your assignments into Canvas and identify what might be missing.
- One thing you may want to consider is if there are any logistical details you need to work out for those assignments i.e., group work, peer review, rubrics, multiple drafts, external technologies so that we can address those.
What to Do Before We Meet Again
- Finish putting in all major and scaffolded assignments into Canvas, fleshing out logistical details like setting up rubrics, peer review, explanation of external tools if needed, group work, etc. (See Homework)
- The Accessibility Tutorial at the end of this module.
