Week 5: Mapping Out Your Course

Mapping on paper banner17.jpg

Before the Workshop

Since you will build out your map from your major assignments, please bring at least a list of those assignments with you.

During the Workshop

This week you will map out your course. During this workshop faculty have traditionally mapped out their courses on paper using sticky notes. There is a very good reason for mapping with sticky notes but the point is that a course map should be a fluid document that can be changed rapidly. This fall you will also have the option to use our new Flow Planner tool. You can decide which method you prefer but the important thing is to create a map. Mapping your course makes it infinitely easier to translate your map into Canvas. We find that faculty who never create a map continually struggle to design their courses. These course maps also helps us—the instructional designers—understand what you are trying to do so that we can make the best suggestions for setting up your course in Canvas.

After the Workshop

HOMEWORK

(If you need to—and it is hard to create a complete course map in a one-hour workshop—continue refining your map.) Then build out a Course Skeleton.

READ AHEAD AND PREPARE

Read all of Week 6: Content Considerations - Organization & Clarity so that you can be ready to hit the ground running for next week's workshop. Even though we will be on hand to help you figure out the best ways to get your content into Canvas, reading ahead will help prepare you.
