Week 3: Card Game
Before the Workshop
If you want to come up with two or three "Do Statements" ahead of time that would be great but it is not required. Here are some Examples of "Do Statements" from other faculty.
During the Workshop
We will play a card game that we designed to help you generate ideas for activities that support your instructional goals. The purpose of the card game is to loosen everyone up and brainstorm ideas. The goal is to facilitate ideation and suspend judgement—and to have fun! Faculty often report that this was one of their favorite workshops, that they ended up using many of the suggestions that came out of the game.
After the Workshop
HOMEWORK
If any useful ideas came out of the card game, go ahead and incorporate them into your assignments. If not, you might still refer to the "Placemat" for more inspiration. Placemat File

READ AHEAD AND PREPARE
- Read the Assignment Design module.
-
Prepare a list of major assignments for your course. (These don't have to be fully fleshed out. The goal is to have some workable—possibly scaffolded—assignments that can be used to build your course around.)
- Select one of your assignments for next week's in-class activity (be sure to read the details!). It might be a draft of new assignment you are working on, one that has worked well but may be in need of a “refresh,” or one that has not worked as you hoped. To facilitate informed and constructive discussion, we ask that you also prepare some reflections to accompany the assignment, indicating:
- The purpose of the assignment — What outcomes/takeaways is it intended to foster and elicit?
- The context in which it is used —In what course or courses, with what students, at what point in the curriculum is the assignment used?
- Your experience with the assignment at this point — How have students responded? What do they do well? What do they find especially challenging?
- What you want to get out of this exercise — What kinds of feedback about the assignment would be useful from your colleagues?
