How to Create Links

Linking is one of the best ways to guide your students through the material, letting them jump into a discussion straight from the module landing page or linking directly to articles in the SU Library.

You can link from both text and images (see image links at bottom of page.) This is a long list of how to make links but you will quickly see that if you want to make a link to something inside your course, look the the right. If you want to make and external link look up. By default text links in Canvas are blue and underlined, therefore it is a good idea to avoid using blue or underlined text anywhere else so that you don't confuse your students into thinking something is a link.


Link to Another Canvas Page

How to: Go to the Links list at right, open the Pages Dropdown Menu and click on the page you want to link to. If you haven't highlighted any text Canvas will insert the name of the page as it exists in the Pages list. Note: If you change the name of the page it will break the link.

Link to a Discussion

Go to the Links list at right, open the Discussions Dropdown Menu and click on the discussion you want to link to. If you haven't highlighted any text Canvas will insert the name of the discussion as it exists in the Discussions list.

Link to an Assignment

Go to the Links list at right, open the Assignments Dropdown Menu and click on the assignment you want to link to. If you haven't highlighted any text Canvas will insert the name of the assignment as it exists in the Assignments list.

Link to a Quiz

Go to the Links list at right, open the Quiz Dropdown Menu and click on the quiz you want to link to. If you haven't highlighted any text Canvas will insert the name of the quiz as it exists in the quiz list.

Link to a File

Go to the Files list at right and find the you want to link to. If you haven't highlighted any text Canvas will insert the name of the file as it exists in the list.

External Link

First highlight some text. Next go up to the toolbar in the content editor and click on the Link Icon. This will open a window where you can type or paste in the URL of the link you want to make. Click Insert.

Using the External Link tool means that your link will open in a new window, which is what you want. If you have a link that you need to open in a new window and it isn't put your cursor over the link text and type Command K. This will open the Insert Link Window where you can change the name and the Target window you want your link to open in.

Permalink to the Library

Use the permalink to the Limieux to link your articles. Here is and Example:

Link to an Email Address

When you type in an email address Canvas will automatically detect it and create the link. Example: jacobsja@seattleu.edu

Creating image links

Everything that you can link from text can also be linked from an image. Simply click on the image and click on the page, assignment, discussion, etc. to create a link to another part of Canvas.

Example Internal Image Link:

If you want to create a link outside of Canvas, click on the picture and use the Link Icon in the toolbar.
