How Much Content Should I Put on a Page?

Canvas Content Pages are a great resource for delivering content but it is not always easy to decide how much content to put on a page or what material should be grouped together. Sometimes it's tempting to put everything on one page (you'll notice we do this ourselves sometimes). However, if you are not careful the effect can be overwhelming and your point will be lost in the confusion.

When possible, put content on pages so that they "read" almost as slides with different ideas on each page. That way students can page through the information and extract the most information. If you title your pages clearly students can easily get back to the information they need for review. Below are two examples of content on pages. The first is an example of all the information on one page. The second is the same information spread across several pages.

Take a look—by clicking on the images or links—to get a feel for the difference. (These pages open in a new window.)

Note: Sometimes we see the reverse of this where there will be just a couple of links to readings on a page. Usually those links belong on a page with other readings or other assignments that need to be accomplished that week.
