Action

We have found the Ignatian concept of action the hardest to operationalize in a college course because it often refers to students’ efforts beyond the time frame of a typical college term. However, well-designed, authentic assignments can help students use their new knowledge to contribute now, as well as in the future.

Lending support to the IPP action component are Jenkins, who advocates for a learning environment that capitalizes on contribution Links to an external site., and David Kolb in his experimentation phase of his Experiential Learning Cycle Links to an external site.. Also, Krathwohl’s affective domain Links to an external site. is relevant, with the Valuing through Characterizing by a Value phases being the most applicable. Krathwohl’s definition of valuing is when a student internalizes a set of values and those values are then expressed in the person’s behaviors.
