Context
Wrapping the four other components the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm is context. Because a hallmark of Jesuit education is personal care of the individual, cura personalis, instructors are encouraged to learn all they can about each student, including their prior knowledge, background and perspectives. Lehman and Conceição (2010) say that pre-course orientation and activities set the tone for the entire course. Conrad and Donaldson (2004) recommend using online profiles to get to know students, both academically and professionally. It is also within context that course content is situated. Elaborating on how course topics fit into the larger educational program helps students align, or link, the course activities to overarching programmatic themes (Hutchings, 2016). |
