Welcome and Safety
Welcome to the Seattle University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department's Francis Wood, S.J. and Nick Arvanitidis, PhD Innovation Lab! Our Innovation Lab operates under the MakerSpace model.
MakerSpaces
So, what are MakerSpaces?:
"A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. " - Diana Rendina
"A space where you can think with your hands.” - Charlie Bennett
“A space filled with dreaming, tinkering, failure, & innovation.” - Andy Plemmons
Curriculum and Instructions
The curriculum and instructions to safely use the tools in the space are organized under "badges" that you can earn. The first badge that you will be required to complete is a "Welcome and Safety" badge which contains an overview of the safety processes for the space such as the location of the first aid kit, how to get additional help in case of an emergency, and the requirements of the additional training required to use the equipment in the lab. Each module, such as 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, and Sewing, will then have a section devoted to safely using each piece of equipment. You must complete the safety portion of each module before you can use the equipment without direct supervision.
Safety Philosophy
It is our belief that all accidents or injuries, however small, can be prevented. To ensure your safety we ask that you learn and follow the safety guidelines for the Innovation Lab. Each module or badge will have a safety introduction for the modules identifying the safety guidelines for using the associated equipment.
All of the safety equipment for the lab is located near the phone near the entry door. At this location you will find the fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and safety glasses.
In case of an emergency in the lab, please dial the appropriate emergency number posted on the placard above the phone. If you have call 911, it is best to dial from a campus phone so the Seattle University Public Safety is also notified. When dialing 911 from campus phone you must dial 9-911 to get an outside line.
Because the Innovation Lab is a working lab, food and drink of any kind are not allowed in the lab.
Finally, it is always a good practice to wash your hands after working in the Innovation Lab.
Lab Equipment and Tools
You may not remove lab equipment or tools from the Innovation Lab to use in another location. Other locations include, your dorm room, senior design room, or another ECE lab. The tools and equipment need to be available for students to use while in the Innovation Lab.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping is very important our Innovation Lab. Research has shown that fewer accidents occur in clean spaces and therefore housekeeping is directly related to safety. Secondly, the space is shared among all students and faculty. We all need to work together to keep the space organized. Please return materials and tools to the location where you found them.
Lockers for storing student projects can be reserved on a quarterly basis on a first come basis by contacting the Innovation Lab Manager.
Responsibility
It is your personal responsibility to work safely in the lab. If we find that you do not follow the safety and housekeeping guidelines for the lab you will lose your opportunity to use the lab for the remainder of the current quarter. If you continue to not follow the safety and housekeeping guidelines in the lab you will lose your opportunity to use the lab for the remainder of the school year.
Concerns
If you have any safety concerns regarding the Innovation Lab please talk with the Innovation Lab Manager. In addition, if any equipment is not working properly please label it with a "Do Not Use" sign including an explanation of the issue. Also, please send an email notifying the Innovation Lab Manager of the issues.
