ARC WORKSHOP 2 - IRAC Refresher

Thanks to all of you who came to the IRAC workshop on September 24. We covered some of the common IRAC problems that we see from 1L students: answers that include a novel, answers that have few or no law-fact connections, answers with no rule statement or with a rule statement that is buried in the analysis, and answers that fail to consider relevant counter-arguments. We also went over some strategies that you can use for successful writing and preparation for your midterm. The video of the workshop is embedded below.

You can see examples of these errors in the PowerPoint presentation Download PowerPoint presentation. The workshop used a short battery hypo. If you would like to attempt to answer the battery hypo and send it to ARC for review, feel free to email it to lawarc@seattleu.edu.  We are also happy to look at practice questions from Civ Pro or other classes to give some feedback on your IRAC and exam writing.

Please keep in mind that the rule provided in the PowerPoint is limited in scope and should be used only for practice. It does not conform to any particular professor's explanation of the battery rules.  Additionally, you should always approach the law as your professor has taught you to approach it.  We used some examples of approaches to Civ Pro so that we could go over principles of IRAC and essay writing, but keep in mind that each professor has their own particular approach to the material and you should use the law as your professor taught it. Also, as we mentioned in the workshop, be flexible with your IRAC so that you meet any writing expectations set forth by your professor. Good luck on your midterm!
