Worldwide approximately 1.1 billion people lack access to electricity. This course focuses on technological solutions to energy poverty, which primarily afflicts people living in less economically developed countries. Topics include: design and analysis of off-grid electrical systems such as renewable energy-powered energy kiosks, solar home systems and micro grids; energy poverty; power system operation under power and energy constraints; development practices. Data and case studies from systems in Zambia, Kenya and elsewhere are used to enrich the course. The course culminates in a team-based project.
