This week we discuss two topics. First, we review the proverbial meat on the bones of design, that is, the content, methods, and materials of a course. These are the topics you will cover; the activities you will use; and the handouts, books, and articles you will distribute. Next, we investigate universal design for learning (UDL), which we use to ensure your learners are engaged with your content, methods, and materials.

Each of these is a large topic, and we will only peel back the first layer in this course. I encourage you all to investigate these topics informally if you plan to pursue a career in course design. For now, though, let's explore how each affects your course.

Assignment 6: Goal and objectives is also due this week.  I encourage you to return to the readings and resources in Module 4: Goal, outcomes and objectives as you work to complete this assignment.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1) Demonstrate online peer exchange processes that foster collaborative learning.
  • 2) Employ reflection as a learning tool.
  • 3) Select teaching, learning and assessment strategies that align with course description, institutional characteristics and target audience needs.
  • 4) Integrate universal design for learning principles into course design.
